Canadian Citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their Spouse / Common-Law or Conjugal Partner, Dependent children of their own or of their spouse and their parents /grand parents for Permanent residence of Canada.
SPOUSE: A person with whom you are legally married. For the purpose of sponsorship for Canadian Permanent Residence, your spouse must be of 18 years age at the time of sponsorship.
COMMON LAW PARTNER:
The Common-Law partner is not legally married to you, can be either sex and must be at least 18 year old. In order to be a Considered as a Common-law partner, you must have been living together for at least 12 months consecutive months in a conjugal relationship without any long periods apart.
CONJUGAL PARTNER:
The conjugal partner is neither married nor in a common-law nor conjugal relationship with you but has been in a relationship with you for one year, lives outside Canada and can not live with you or marry in their country of residence or marry you because of significant legal and immigration reasons.
DEPENDENT CHILD:
A dependent child is your or your spouse child who is under 22 years old and unmarried/single or over 22 and dependent upon parents due to some medical condition.
PARENTS GRANDPARENTS :
Parent and grand parent of a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident and their spouse along dependent child of any one of them can be sponsored for Canadian Permanent Residence.
ELIGIBILITY:
You can sponsor your spouse, Common-law or conjugal partner if:
- You’re at least 18 years old
- You’re a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
- If you’re a Canadian citizen living outside Canada, you must show that you plan to live in Canada when the persons you want to sponsor become permanent residents.
- You can’t sponsor someone if you’re a permanent resident living outside Canada.
- You’re able to prove that you’re not receiving social assistance for reasons other than a disability
- you can provide for the basic needs of any persons you want to sponsor
Financial Requirements:
For Sponsorship of spouse, common law and conjugal partner and dependent children, you do not need to show any financial requirement. However, for sponsorship of the others you are required to prove your income and meet financial requirements.

Sponsorship application is a two staged process. In the first stage, sponsor’s eligibility is evaluated. Upon completion of sponsor’s eligibility to sponsor, applicant’s eligibility and admissibility are assessed.

ASSESSMENT PROCESS BY FEDERAL IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT (IRCC)
1. ELIGIBILITY ASSESSMENT
As a first step Sponsor eligibility is assessed in order to sponsor his / her spouse. This process is performed inside Canada.
2. ADMISSIBILITY ASSESSMENT
After completion of eligibility review, applicants and any accompanying family members are assessed for Admissibility as per the Canadian Immigration & Refugees Protection Act.
