A Canada Visitor Visa (also known as a Temporary Resident Visa, TRV) allows individuals to travel to Canada for temporary purposes such as tourism, visiting family or friends, or attending business events. Here are the typical requirements and steps for applying for a Canada Visitor Visa:

1. Completed Visa Application Form

    • Application Form (IMM 5257): You need to fill out the IMM 5257 form for the visitor visa. This can be done online or on paper, depending on the method you choose for your application.

    • Family Information Form (IMM 5645): This form must be completed if you are applying as a family member.

    • Statutory Declaration of Common-law Union (IMM 5409): If applicable, you must also submit this form if you are in a common-law relationship.


2. Valid Passport

    • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date from Canada.

    • It should also have at least one blank page for the visa stamp.


3. Passport-sized Photos

    • Passport-sized photo is required that meet the Canada visa photo requirements (35mm x 45mm, with a white background).


4. Proof of Financial Support

You must show that you can financially support yourself (and any accompanying family members) during your stay in Canada. You can demonstrate this by providing:

    • Bank statements of last 3-6 months showing sufficient, maintained funds.

    • Pay slips or proof of income if employed.

    • Tax returns or income tax documents.

    • Details of activities: Outline the activities you plan to do during your stay in Canada (tourism, business meetings, family visits, etc.).


6. Invitation Letter (if applicable)

If you are visiting family or friends in Canada, an invitation letter from your Canadian host is required. The letter should include:

    • The full name and contact details of your host.

    • A clear statement of the relationship between you and the host.

    • The address where you will be staying.

    • The duration and purpose of your visit.

    • Proof of the host’s legal status in Canada (e.g., Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, etc.).


7. Evidence of Ties to Your Home Country

To show that you will return to your home country after your visit, you must provide evidence of strong ties, such as:

    • Employment letter: A letter from your employer confirming your position, salary, and approved leave.

    • Property ownership: Documents showing you own property or have other financial commitments in your home country.

    • Family relationships: Proof of dependents or family obligations that you must return to.

    • Educational enrollment: If you are a student, provide proof of your enrollment and intention to return after your visit.


8. Health Insurance

    • Travel health insurance: It is recommended to have travel health insurance for the duration of your stay in Canada, although it is not mandatory. Insurance ensures coverage in case of medical emergencies or accidents during your visit.


9. Biometrics (if applicable)

    • Depending on your nationality, you may be required to provide biometric information (fingerprints and photographs). If biometrics are required, you will be informed after submitting your application, and you will need to schedule an appointment at the nearest Visa Application Center (VAC).


10. Processing Time

    • The processing time for a Canada Visitor Visa can vary, but it typically takes between 10 to 30 business days. However, the processing time can depend on factors such as your country of residence, the volume of applications, and the time of year.

    • It’s recommended to apply at least 3-4 weeks before your planned departure to ensure sufficient processing time.


How to Apply for a Canada Visitor Visa

    • Canadian Visitor visa is applied online on IRCC website. 

    • Prepare Your Documents: Gather all required documents (passport, financial statements, photos, invitation letter, etc.).

    • Pay the Visa Application Fee: The application fee for a visitor visa is typically CAD 100. You will also need to pay an additional fee if biometrics are required (approximately CAD 85).

    • Submit Your Application

    • Biometrics Appointment: All Applicants aged 14-79 need to appear for Biometrics exam, once every ten years. Biometrics are valid for 10 years. 

    • Attend the Visa Interview (if applicable): In some cases, you may be asked to attend an interview at the Canadian Embassy or Consulate.

    • Wait for a Decision: After your application is processed, you will receive a decision regarding your visa. If approved, your visa will be stamped in your passport or sent electronically (if applicable).

    • Collect Your Visa: If approved, you will receive instructions on how to collect your passport with the visa. If you submitted your application online, the visa will be electronically linked to your passport.


Visitor Visa Conditions

    • Duration of Stay: A Canada Visitor Visa typically allows you to stay in Canada for up to 6 months. However, the exact duration will be determined by the border services officer upon arrival in Canada. A Canadian VIsitor visa can be valid for upto 10 years or expiry of your passport or upto the validity of your biometrics.

    • Multiple or Single Entry: Depending on the visa issued, you may be granted a single-entry or multiple-entry visa.

    • Extensions: If you wish to stay longer than the date specified on your visitor visa, you must apply for an extension before your current visa expires. Extensions are not guaranteed, and you must provide valid reasons for the extension.
