- Express Entry:
The Express Entry system continues to be a primary pathway for skilled workers to immigrate to Canada. Launched in 2015, Express Entry uses a points-based system to evaluate candidates based on factors such as age, education, work experience, and language proficiency. In 2024, updates to the system have streamlined processes, ensuring faster processing times and a more responsive selection system.
The following four classes of immigration applications are processed through Express Entry:
- Federal Skilled Worker (FSWP) Federal Program: The Federal Skilled Worker Program is designed for skilled workers with foreign work experience who want to immigrate to Canada permanently. To be eligible, candidates must meet minimum requirements for language proficiency, education, work experience, and adaptability factors.
- Federal Skilled Trades Worker (FSTP) Federal Program: The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for skilled workers with experience in specific trades who want to immigrate to Canada permanently. Eligible occupations include industrial, electrical, and construction trades, among others. Candidates must meet language proficiency requirements and have at least two years of full-time work experience in the trade within the last five years.
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC): The Canadian Experience Class is for individuals who have gained skilled work experience in Canada on a temporary basis and wish to transition to permanent residency. To qualify, candidates must have at least one year of full-time skilled work experience in Canada within the last three years, along with language proficiency and other eligibility criteria.
- Provincial Nominationof certain Provincial Programs (PNP): In addition to the federal streams, many provinces and territories in Canada have their own Express Entry-aligned streams under their Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). These streams allow provinces to nominate candidates from the Express Entry pool who have the skills and experience needed in their local labor markets. Each province or territory has its own criteria and eligibility requirements, targeting specific occupations or demographics.
Candidates need to fulfill the eligibility criteria of one of the above-mentioned classes.
Candidates in the Express Entry pool compete for points out of 1200. They are awarded points on the basis of certain individuals and combinations of skills. This points-based system is called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) which ranks candidates in the Express Entry Pool.
Candidates in Express Entry Pool get up to 600 points under the Core and up to 600 under the additional points. The core points are further divided into three subcategories:
